What is knee replacement surgery?

Knee replacement surgery can resolve chronic knee pain resulting from severe injuries, joint instability, or degenerative diseases like arthritis when nonsurgical treatments are unsuccessful.

The leading reason for knee replacement surgery is osteoarthritis. This disease typically develops in mid or later life after decades of joint wear-and-tear.

If knee pain and stiffness affect your quality of life and nothing else is helping, talk to Robert J Otto MD about knee replacement surgery.

What knee replacement options are available?

Knee replacement involves removing damaged and diseased sections of the knee and replacing them with artificial (prosthetic) components that work just like a natural joint. Knee replacement options include:

Partial knee replacement

A partial or unicompartmental knee replacement involves removing only the damaged part of the joint, so you retain any healthy bone.

Total knee replacement

A total knee replacement removes the entire knee joint.

Dr. Otto offers same-day outpatient partial or total knee replacement surgeries that restore function to your knee joint and alleviate chronic pain.

What happens during knee replacement surgery?

Before knee replacement surgery, you undergo an evaluation to determine the best artificial joint size and position. If performing a robotic knee replacement, Dr. Otto may use CT scans and digital 3D imaging to create pictures of the knee joint. This can also be performed without advanced imaging during the operation using some robotic equipment.

During total knee replacement surgery, Dr. Otto removes the end of your femur (thigh) bone and replaces it with a metal cap. He also removes the tibia (shin) bone and replaces it with a metal tray that supports a plastic insert.

If you also have patellar (kneecap) damage, Dr. Otto fits another piece of plastic under the kneecap’s surface. The posterior cruciate ligament (PCL) in your knee, which stabilizes the joint on each side, might also need replacing with a polyethylene (plastic) post.

Dr. Otto uses cutting-edge navigated knee replacement technology during the procedure, allowing him to visualize and position the joint precisely. He also performs robotic-assisted knee replacement surgery.

How long does recovery from knee replacement surgery take?

Everyone heals at different rates after knee replacement surgery. Dr. Otto monitors your progress and ensures you receive expert follow-up care.

At first, you will use a walker for stability, but you start physical therapy soon after your surgery. Physical therapy restores joint and muscle function and helps the surgical site heal.
