Everything You Need to Know Before Your Next Joint Replacement

Deciding to move forward with joint replacement surgery is exciting and could provide a return to pain-free mobility. If you’re wondering what to expect as you prepare for your surgery, we’re here to offer some insight and guidance.

Very often, the most difficult part of joint replacement surgery is deciding to have the procedure. After all, few people relish the thought of surgery, and joint replacement does require some downtime.

Robert J. Otto, MD, is happy to provide you with information about what to expect from your surgical procedure and how to best prepare.

Of course, each surgery is unique, and your experience will be shaped by a number of factors. But heading into the process with an understanding of the basic steps involved can help you prepare for a successful recovery.

Let’s cover some basics of what to expect as you prepare for your joint replacement surgery.

Today’s joint replacements are often minimally invasive

While there are still some cases in which traditional open surgery is the best surgical approach, most modern joint replacement procedures use minimally invasive surgical techniques.

That means there’s no need for the large incision required with open surgery. Less tissue is displaced, both at the surface of your skin and at the surgical site.

Minimally invasive surgery can also decrease your risk of infection, as there’s less internal surface area exposed during the procedure, and less tissue that needs to mend itself afterward.

Your recovery process will also be easier when you have a minimally invasive joint replacement. You’ll be back on your feet in no time and moving through physical therapy shortly after your procedure.

Physical therapy is a necessary part of the process

In most cases, you’ll need a course of physical therapy as part of your recovery process. Your therapist helps you perform exercises and stretches that support your body’s healing process.

You’ll strengthen the muscles that support your repaired joint and keep the joint moving freely as you heal. While physical therapy isn’t always enjoyable, it’s a necessary part of the process.

Be sure to communicate with your physical therapist as you move through your sessions. Expect some tasks to be more difficult than others and a degree of discomfort while performing the exercises. But there should never be extreme pain, so let your practitioner know if you encounter significant distress.

Taking your medication as advised is important

If you require medication after your procedure, Dr. Otto will provide the prescription(s) and advise you on when and how to take your medications. Be sure to adhere to these guidelines and take your medication as prescribed, even if you aren’t in pain.

It’s also helpful to fill your prescription in advance so you have everything you need when you arrive home after your joint replacement surgery. Asking a loved one to stay with you and help out around the house for a couple of days is also advisable.

Call in some favors

Asking for help is an important part of preparing for joint replacement surgery. Even if everything goes exceptionally well, you won’t be at your best for a few days after surgery.

Avoid pushing yourself too far in the days following joint replacement. Having a friend or loved one there to give a helping hand can make a world of difference. So, feel free to call in those favors and come up with fun ways to relax and take it easy after your procedure.
